In 1997 Jess Jones decided to plant his "test" vineyard on the family farm south of Dixon. He planted six varieties of wine grapes - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese - to see how each would grow and produce wine grapes on his fertile soil with the delta climate. He found that all six varieties did quite well here! Although Jess sold most of his early grapes to other winemakers, his first wines (Merlot and Cabernet) were produced from his 2000 harvest. They were a surprising success! During all of these years, Jess has been studying winemaking at U.C. Davis and attending various conferences and conventions. He began producing his own wine in 2004. Jess Jones Vineyard currently has 7 different wines - 3 dry wines (Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon), 2 dessert wines, and 2 ports - available for your drinking pleasure! |
